Dr David Vivian is past-president and a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Musculoskeletal Medicine (AFMM), and past-president of the Australian Association of Musculoskeletal Medicine (AAMM). He has over 25 years experience in pain assessment and management. Dr Vivian is co-author of the NHMRC Guidelines on Acute Musculoskeletal Pain released in 2004. He has a major interest in musculoskeletal pain research. He has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of complex and difficult pain problems and regularly presents lectures around Australia on the topics of neuropathic and spinal pain: particularly related to the evidence-based management of acute back pain in general practice (for example, GPCE 2006 and 2007). He was an initiator and then a medical participant in the National Musculoskeletal Medicine Initiative, which showed that evidence-based medical management of acute musculoskeletal problems resulted not only in superior short and long term outcomes, but also in lowered cost of treatment.

  • Accredited as a Master of Spinal Needle Techniques, by objective examination, under the auspices of the International Spinal Injection Society (ISIS), 1998.

Over many years, Dr Vivian has attended numerous cadaver course in needle intervention; combined use of anatomical dissection with placement of needles under fluoroscopic vision.

    Dr Vivian has written teaching guidelines for the RACGP. Since 1981, he has regularly, at least on an annual basis, conducted lectures for the Family Medicine Training Programme, and the College of GP ’s. Topics include: The Management of Spinal Pain Problems (cervical, thoracic and lumbar), and Management of Shoulder Disorders.

    Dr Vivian also regularly lectures to Post-Graduate Physiotherapy training courses, Nursing Groups, and have in the past lectured the undergraduate Health Sciences students. He has conducted many pre- and post-conference courses over the last 20 years.
